Six Limiting Beliefs About Style You Should Ignore

Hello You!

I was recently thinking about all the fashion “rules” that exist and how they can limit our ability to step into our true style. I generally disregard the fashion dos and don’ts, unless they apply to fit and proportion, but for those who still think you have to abide by those outdated and arbitrary ideas, it’s time to rethink things.

Below are six outdated fashion myths we’ve been led to believe, and ways you can do things differently.

1.“You’re too old to be fashionable and stylish”

Great style is attainable at any age. Look at style icon like Iris Apfel! She was over 100 and was killin’ the fashion game. You deserve to look good and feel good about yourself regardless of your age!

You can be bold and badass at any age!

2. “All black should be your go-to if you want to look slimmer.”

Wearing all black can be a great look if it’s done effectively. The styles, textures, and fit of an all black outfit can create a head-turning and slimming ensemble — BUT that’s not the only way to appear sleek and chic. Other ways to look slimmer include ensuring your clothing fits well, strategic color-blocking, and and cinching your waist. (See the examples below.)

Blouses and button-downs should nip you in at the waist for a fitted silhouette without adding any additional bulk to the chest area.

3. “You can’t wear denim on denim.”

Denim on denim is a great look. Forget the fashion “rules” of yesteryear. Wear the same color or wash from top to bottom to create a cohesive and impactful look. Pair two different washes, such as a dark denim and a light wash — or blue denim and a colored option.

4. “Your handbag and shoes should match”

That’s another ridiculous fashion “rule” that should be completely ignored. Wear a bag and shoes in contrasting colors to complement your outfit. It’s also a great way to look effortless and less “matchy-matchy”(Which is awesome too!!)

It’s actually far more sophisticated to wear neutrals that don’t match exactly, but there is an art to it. It’s all about keeping the neutrals in the same general tone. Its about HARMONY.

5. “You need a closet full of clothes to be stylish and fashion-forward.”

No…you need to build a wardrobe that reflects your personality and complements your lifestyle. Stop filling your closet with pieces you’ll never wear. Stop buying clothing just because it’s trendy, but doesn’t represent who you are. Evaluate your lifestyle and make your purchases accordingly. Learn how to mix and match your existing pieces. More clothing is not equivalent to great style.

6. “I’m too big to be stylish and fashionable.”

Not true at all!!!. You can be stylish at any size. The fashion industry still has some catching up to do to create more inclusive sizes, but designers are s-l-o-w-l-y starting to come around and design fashionable clothing that goes single and low double digit sizes. There are more fashionable options in a range of sizes than ever before.

Because fashion is for all of us !!!

So…..

Toss all the outdated fashion rules and myths out the window. It’s time to let your personality, preferences, and style shine through! Dressing well is a form of self care, so embrace everything that makes you special and start taking care of yourself by investing in your Personal Style.
